About Guaifenesin
Guaifenesin, familiar to many as the main ingredient in expectorants such
as Robitussin, has become the basis of a treatment for a number of varied conditions often diagnoses as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, and
vulvodynia.
The guai protocol is the subject of several books by Dr. R. Paul St. Amand, the
treatment's developer, and Claudia Craig Marek. The best introductory book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia: The Revolutionary Treatment That Can Reverse the Disease" is based on Dr. St Amand's 40 years of
experience in using the protocol to treat these disorders. Guai support groups on the
Internet has brought together thousands who have been using the therapy all over
the world
The basic theory behind the protocol is that all of these conditions are really individual
manifestations of a genetic anomaly which effects the body's ability to excrete phosphates
(and perhaps other minerals) effectively. These retained minerals gradually form deposits
throughout the body, generating a great variety of troublesome symptoms. The focus on
specific organs and systems of the body have long obscured the true nature of this complex
and varied syndrome.
Throughout all of human history such conditions as rheumatism, growing
pains, and neuralgias have been treated locally. Dr. St. Amand's theory is that these
symptoms have just been masking the real underlying cause.
Originally Dr. St. Amand developed his theory while treating a patient with gout. This
patient mentioned that tartar on his teeth could be easily flaked off ever since he began
to take gout medication. This got Dr. St. Amand thinking about the gout medication's
effect on other mineral deposits in the body. The patient's other health problems, which
now would probably be diagnosed as fibromyalgia, were also greatly improved by the gout
medication. Dr. St. Amand set out to find out why. He tells some fascinating tales
of this journey to discovery of the guai treatment in his book. Everyone thinking of
starting the protocol should become familiar with the fascinating story of this search.
